Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of Paranthan Chemical Factory

The foundation stone laying ceremony for the reconstruction of the Paranthan Chemical Factory was held on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at the factory premises. The event began with blessings from religious leaders. The factory nameboard and foundation stone were unveiled by former employees of the Parandan Chemicals Co.Ltd. The welcome address was delivered by the company Chairman, S. Nesarajan.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including:
• Minister of Industry and Industrial Development – Hon. Sunil Handunnethi
• Minister of Fisheries / Marine, Aquarium and Marine Resources – Hon. E. Chandrasekar
• Secretary of the Ministry of Finance- Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma
• Governor of the Northern Province – Hon. Na. Vedhanayagan
• District Secretariat Kilinochchi- Mr.S.Muralitharan
• Member of Parliament – Hon. K. Ilangumaran
• Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Industry – Mahesh Abeysekara
• District and regional government officials, cooperative members, and members of the public.
Originally founded in 1954, the factory played a major role in meeting the country’s chemical needs but was closed in 1985 due to the war situation. The government has allocated Rs. 500 million to restart the project. With a total investment of Rs. 6.3 billion, the factory is expected to be fully completed within 30 months under a public–private partnership.
The event concluded with a tree planting ceremony to commemorate the occasion and promote environmental sustainability.
